The Prayers I Pray

Speak to me before you get down and we’re through.
I didn’t meant to turn you so fast.
I’ll be more than fine in a minute or two.
The morning weighed in heavy with advice
on all the acts last night that weren’t so wise.
The night was full of holes I hadn’t planned.
Still my mind goes first to memories
when I try to understand
Why the fire won’t turn
And the car won’t burn
And the prayers I pray aren’t for nothing
One last time around should be all I can stand.
One last chance to find my way down.
My head and heels don’t know
where the both of them’ll land.
I get lost in music on a whim,
and I get lost in cheap booze quicker still.
I’m well aware the drink is my best friend.
But when I wake up tomorrow, I’ll ask myself again
Why the fire won’t turn
And the car won’t burn
And the prayers I pray aren’t for nothing
